Main Purpose of the Role

The Application Hosting Engineer is responsible for maintaining and deploying Computershare’s software across our Production and Test environments. As a member of the Hosting team you will be responsible for managing the appropriate Windows Server Environments, SSL and F5 LTM Configuration and the delivery of internal projects.

Application Hosting Engineers are also expected to contribute to Computershare’s technology stack by enhancing existing processes, including a substantial initiative towards automation. The team is responsible for managing Computershare’s build and deployment platforms and utilising them to drive towards continuous delivery. Hosting engineers will have awareness of the ‘Everything as Code’ approach and constantly look to standardise key processes and make good use of scripting languages such as PowerShell.

The team is reliant on close collaboration with both operational and development teams. Acting as consultants, Hosting Engineers are expected to assist other technology teams to ensure the delivery of robust applications and services.

Main Responsibilities of the Role

  • Provide the technical point of contact for all issues pertaining to the availability, security and performance of all online machines, in both the Production and Development/Test environments
  • Work with development and infrastructure teams, as well as external vendors to determine the root cause of issues and document and implement problem items as part of the Problem Management process.
  • Management of the application operating environment including new environment builds, deployment, LTM management, firewall configuration, monitoring, capacity planning, security patching and other configuration.
  • Management of releases and system upgrades including the deployment of web and application servers and configuration of these components in accordance with Computershare standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures and research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks, liaising with Development and delivery teams to ensure consistent delivery of software services.
  • Providing guidance to delivery teams on application hosting and environments best practice, industry standards and innovations

 

Required Experience

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and debugging skills, with the ability to collect and analyse complex material and data, and present it in accessible formats
  • Strong customer facing and communication skills - written and verbal, with a high attention to detail.
  • Exposure to enterprise level application hosting
  • Exposure to business analysis, release management and service delivery
  • Experience .Net Application Server management (IIS, Windows Services, Scheduled Tasks etc.)
  • Exposure to process automation, PowerShell Automation and scripting
  • Strong mind-set to enforce security standards, both in the environments and when collaborating with teams. 

 

Desired Experience

  • Previous experience in setting up large and highly resilient infrastructure configurations in multiple datacentres.
  • Exposure to Azure or other cloud computing practices and methodologies
  • Exposure to CI/CD tools such as OctopusDeploy, TeamCity, Proget, Jenkins, etc.
  • Good working knowledge of MS SQL server and relational database methodology

Please be aware that this role does include a requirement for some out of hours work to support projects and software releases. Computershare has several offices in the UK; some inter-site travel may be required on occasion.
